Bike Development

Bike Development is an application for calculating the effect of gears on bicycle performance.

The two common ways of reporting the effect that bicycle gears have are development and gear-inches.

Development is the theoretical distance, in metres, the bike will travel as a result of one complete turn of the pedal crank.

Gear-inches reports the theoretical diameter, in inches, of the tire that would be needed to yield the same result as the actual tire and gear combination, if the theoretical tire were directly driven by the pedals (like old style bicycles).

The application allows direct entry of the actual tire diameter in either millimetres or inches, so it should accommodate any size of tire.

While the gear picker includes a large range of possible gear values by default, you can customize the gears to an arbitrary set by specifying them on the flipside view.

This view is also where you can choose your preferred units for the wheel diameter.
